Scientists design platform to conduct chemical analysis using a smartphone

Scientists from the multidisciplinary research group ECsens of the University of Granada (UGR) have developed and tested a new system that enables a large number of chemical analysis techniques to be performed in situ, using a smartphone. This platform, featured in the prestigious Biosensors & Bioelectronics journal, presents results comparable to those of standard laboratories and has been validated in its measurement of various important compounds, such as glucose and pH.

Researchers design 鈥渟mart鈥 asphalts with magnetic materials for safer electric scooters

Scientists from the University of Granada have used magnetic materials in 鈥渟mart鈥 asphalts that modify their properties in the presence of external magnetic fields. This work鈥攑art of the wider research field of 鈥渟mart cities鈥濃攚ould enable roads to signal to scooters when to slow down, for example, or could automatically cut off the electric motor or engine in case of danger.

15,000 Spaniards may be unaware they are suffering from the rare bone disease hypophosphatasia

Scientists from the research group CIBERFES and the University of Granada (UGR) have implemented a protocol for effectively detecting hypophosphatasia and have discovered two new genetic mutations associated with this disease, which is often confused with other bone ailments. Extrapolating the data from their study, published in Scientific Reports, they estimate that between 4,000 and 15,000 Spaniards may be undiagnosed.
