
- The number of Highly Cited Researchers at the University of Granada has doubled since last year
- The UGR is the second-highest ranked university in Spain in the Clarivate Analytics list of Highly Cited Researchers for 2018
The University of Granada鈥檚 research potential once again stands out in the 2018 list of Highly Cited Researchers compiled by the North American company Clarivate Analytics. The list identifies the 6,000 most influential scientists across the globe in 21 fields. Renowned institutions such as Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) lead the ranking this year with 186 and 148 highly cited researchers, respectively.
The UGR has achieved its best result to date in this prestigious ranking system, with 8 highly cited researchers featuring in the list, compared with 4 researchers in 2017. Seven of these scientists conduct research in the field of computer science, six of whom, in turn, are from the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The other highly cited researcher is from the field of public health.

A total of 115 highly cited researchers from Spain (59 of whom work at universities) feature in this year鈥檚 ranking, representing 1.9% of the full list. The University of Barcelona tops the list with 11 researchers, followed by the University of Granada, with 8, and Jaume I University, with 5. The University of the Balearic Islands and the University of Valencia hold 4th and 5th position, respectively.
In the Andalusian context, the only institutions with highly cited researchers are Loyola University (1 researcher) and the University of Seville (2 researchers).
The Highly Cited Researchers list recognises the most influential researchers in the world by identifying papers that have been highly cited by the international scientific community. In other words, these researchers are the authors of papers that feature in the top 1% of the most cited papers in the world.
